Winners of the CHSA’s 2019 Undergraduate Bursary Announced

Applicants were assessed by a Judging Panel, led by CHSA Vice President and Treasurer David Garcia, according to need, worthiness, endeavour, and overall performance.
Going to the University of Birmingham to study Criminology, Maisey, whose mother works at Woodridge Cleaning Supplies, is fascinated by the punishment and rehabilitation process and the impact of crime on local communities. She intends to use the bursary for books and to help pay for accommodation and living expenses. Tim, whose mother works at Greyland, is going to study Chemistry at the University of Nottingham. Tim impressed the panel with his passion for the subject. He participated and succeeded at the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Chemistry Olympiad and Cambridge University Chemistry Challenge. He also volunteers with a local rocket manufacturer, with which he visits local school to inspire young people. With a timetable that makes getting a job challenging, Tim will use the bursary to fund his living expenses.
Expressing her delight at being selected, Maisey said: “Firstly, I would like to say a massive thank you for your support. It will allow me to pursue my ambitions at the University of Birmingham. I am beyond grateful for the generosity of the CHSA and the opportunity I have been given.”

“We are always astounded by the standard of applicants,” explained David Garcia. “This year it was closer than ever. Each applicant impressed with their hard work, commitment and determination to succeed. With barely a point separating them, we debated longer than ever at the end of the day before confirming the successful applicants.
“Tim and Maisey are worthy recipients. I am confident they will make good use of their bursaries to capitalize on the opportunities ahead of them.”
Tim and Maisey join the CHSA’s current bursary recipients – 2018’s recipients Krupa Solanki and Ellie Walker, 2017’s recipients Lauren Moss, Chloe Hamilton and Lewis Baron. They will receive the first of three instalments of £1,500 each in September. The second and third payments will be made at the start of their second and third years of their degrees.
